Well, I grew up under the glow of the Golden Dome in South Bend, IN. (Hey, at least I'm not from Ann Arbor, right?) Anyway, yes, I am a Fighting Irish fanatic! And guess what? Being from South Bend doesn't really make it any easier to get football tickets.....unfortunately.
I grew up on the west side of town in the "country," where the worst things we had to worry about were ticks and snakes...so, no crime, but still worries of insect disease and reptile bites. I did some time in Catholic schools and the rest in the fine public schools of northern Indiana, where I graduated from Washington High School. After that, not knowing what the heck to do "in the real world," I decided to go to college - the only thing I DID know was that I wanted to continue playing baseball. So, it was off to Ball State for one year, then a transfer to Northern Iowa. Had a GREAT time playing baseball in school, but something told me to let go of the pro ball dream and figure out what to do as a regular working Joe.
I had always been fascinated by the cool guys on the radio I listened to growing up (especially the guys on the Chicago airwaves), and decided I'd make a go of something to do with the radio biz. So, in 1991, with my brand new Communications degree in hand, I landed my first full-time radio job...in Pennsylvania. My wife, an Iowa girl who I met in college, said "You're taking us where?!" So there we were, a couple midwestern kids heading off to make a new life in PA. I landed up doing different radio jobs up and down the dial in Harrisburg, PA, Winchester, VA, Hagerstown, MD and Morgantown, WV over the next several years. Then, in late 2005, my wife and I decided to leave the Mid-Atlantic area behind and move back closer to our families. Hello Dayton! This is the closest we've been to our families in a long time, so it's nice to be within a reasonable driving distance now.
When I'm not doing the Afternoon Show on K99.1 FM, I love watching sports, watching shows about big cats, watching home improvement shows, watching Friends re-runs, watching a select FEW reality shows and watching pretty much anything in High Def. Okay, I just realized, I watch a lot of TV. However, I DO engage in other stuff besides watching TV. I also love to golf, like to bowl, shoot pool, shoot hoops....pretty much anything competitive. I also actually kinda enjoy yardwork for some reason. Actually though, my side Voiceover business takes up A LOT of my time these days. It's kinda like a hobby I get paid for, which is cool.
Some random Norm Kelly factoids :
First Job: Bagging onions at a South Bend farm. Couldn't beat THAT fun.
First Radio job: At the student-operated station in college.
First paying Radio job : Part-time Overnights at an AM station in Waterloo, IA.
Always thought about being: A fighter pilot, and a Notre Dame baseball player. Motion sickness ruined the first one and my SAT scores ruined the other.
Things I'm kinda Proud Of: Indiana First Team All State 3rd Baseman in 1985; Graduating College; Hitting the very first homerun in South Bend's (then brand new) Stanley Coveleski minor league stadium in the summer of '87 (it's the stadium the Dragons play in when they play the Silverhawks in South Bend); being married to the same person now for close to 20 years!
Things that make me scratch my head: How many cars there are with turn signals that apparently don't work; Why Notre Dame ever hired Gerry Faust; Why kids today don't fold the bills of their baseball caps (don't they realize how ridiculous the flat-as-a-diving-board bill looks?!); How many orange barrels are in the Miami Valley. Does road construction ever end around here?!
Favorites-Movie: "Rudy" of course!
TV Channels: ESPN; Animal Planet; HGTV; Most of my High Def channels!
Food: Free; Cheeseburgers; Italian; Mexican.
Place to relax: In front of my big screen TV; The beach.
Sport: College Football, hands down!
Automobile: One that's paid off.
Song: C'mon................The Notre Dame Victory March, of course.
Quote: "Yesterday's history, tomorrow's a mystery, TODAY is a GIFT....that's why they call it The Present."
